McCreary County is home to an abundance of recreational
opportunities, both in terms of parks, attractions and
facilities, and natural, outdoor recreation in the Daniel Boone
National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation
Area. There are many trails locally for hiking, horseback
riding, and ATVs, as well as opportunities for fishing, hiking
and camping...not to mention water sports like canoeing and

County Recreational Facilities
McCreary County Government operates recreational facilities
through its appointed Park Board, consisting of seven members
who meet monthly. The facilities managed by this board include
the McCreary County Community Park and Sandhill Conservation &
RV Camp.

The new McCreary County Community Park is located on a 100 acre
section of land on US Highway 27 just north of Whitley City, KY
and currently includes ball fields being used by the local
Little League Association, a playground area, fairgrounds, and a
multi-purpose community building which houses the McCreary
County Senior Citizens' Center, a gymnasium for community use,
and office and meeting space. Future plans for the park site
include adding additional playgrounds, shelters, and
basketball/volleyball courts.

Sandhill Camp, originally a 4-H camp, is located on KY Highway
700 just about 4.5 miles east of US Highway 27 in Whitley City,
KY. The camp features about forty RV campsites with hookups
including electric and water, as well as a community building
with kitchen, meeting space, laundry and showers. There are also
several shelters, a stage with electricity, playground, and
basketball court on site. The camp hosts several major events
each year including an annual Junior ROTC gathering and the
Blazin' Bluegrass Festival each September.
