In honor of history, community & opportunity!
McCreary County's Centennial Birthday Celebration will be held Monday March 12, 2012 starting at 10:00am at the County Courthouse in downtown Whitley City. The day's activities begin with A Governor's Visit: A historical sketch of Governor James McCreary's visit to the young county in 1914.
Other activities of the day include the unveiling of portraits of the past County Judges and Judge Executives, a proclamation signed at the regular Fiscal Court meeting that day at 4:30pm, and a birthday gathering of the Girl Scouts at 6:00pm.

GIRL SCOUTS TAKING PART IN 100 YEAR CELEBRATION
As McCreary County turns 100 in 2012, so do the Girl Scouts. Local Girl Scouts will celebrate 100 years of scouting and 100 years of McCreary County with a Birthday Celebration Monday March 12th at 6:00pm at the McCreary County Courthouse, featuring a special ceremony followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend!
Historical Society Seeking Descendants of County's Founders
The McCreary County Historical and Genealogical Society, in cooperation with the McCreary County Centennial Project, has announced they are seeking descendants of the early founders of the county. For information or to report on a descendant of one of these early pioneers of the county, contact the McCreary County Public Library on Main Street in downtown Whitley City or by phone at 606-376-8738.

Centennial Committee Issues Open Call for Photographs & Papers
As planning continues for McCreary County's 100th birthday in 2012, the Centennial Committee in cooperation with the McCreary County Museum has issued an open call for donations of photographs and documents. These articles should help tell the story of how the people of McCreary County "lived, laughed and played" throughout the county's 100 year history. Documents and photographs can be scanned and returned to the donor. For information stop by the McCreary County Museum in Stearns, call 606-376-5730 or e-mail director@highland.net.
McCreary County Museum Celebrating Business Timeline
The McCreary County Museum is requesting local business owners to share a history of their business with the Museum so we they can document current businesses across the county. Staff will also be interviewing individuals to recall businesses of the past. With a goal to document every business over the past one hundred years, the Museum plans to create a timeline that will Celebrate Businesses of the Past and Present. The Museum plans to reveal the exhibit during the Centennial in 2012. If you are a local business owner or a local historian and want to help – please let us know. You can also download the Business Questionnaire below, complete it, interview a local business or an individual that recalls businesses of long ago and return it to the McCreary County Museum.
